The tune of this famous piece was written around 1856 by William Steffe, and a different set of lyrics that was sung as a campfire spiritual.  The words of this piece were written by Julia Ward Howe in 1861, and published on the front page of The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862.  A nice addition in a patriotic concert, the flute carries the melody throughout the piece.
