To my parents, who introduced me to the world of music and Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alain Marion, who gave me the world through music…
Author Sheryl Cohen has practiced and taught the Rampal School’s approach to musical artistry since first studying with Jean-Pierre Rampal in 1967 and Alain Marion in 1968. Until their deaths, she received training from Rampal and Maron in private lessons, master classes, and during two summers at the Academie Internationale d’Ete in Nice, France. In the spring of 1983, she observed Alain Marion’s class at the Conservatoire Nationale Superior de Musique in Paris, to further document the methods and curriculum of the Rampal School. Sheryl Cohen has performed and presented master classes worldwide, and is Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama.
“Imagine a school that has no rules or dogma, where life and music point the way. Rules confine and limit artistic expression. There is not a right way to play an instrument, to shape a phrase, or to make music. Even a belief in one type of tone quality eleminates thousands of possibilities… Apply this free spirited approach to every aspect of flute playing, musicianship, and life, and you have the school of Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alain Marion.” – From Bel Canto Flute: The Rampal School
