Beyond the Pale was commissioned by Judy Diez d’Aux to be performed by members of the National Flute Association Low Flutes Committee at the 2023 National Flute Association Convention in Phoenix, Arizona. The theme of the 2023 National Flute Association Convention was “Beyond Borders”. This piece’s title Beyond the Pale plays with the idea of going outside the borders of acceptable behavior and judgement to widen the range of timbre typical of the low flutes by using extended techniques such as beatboxing, pizzicato, and key clicks. Low flutes can do more than play low and slow with a lumbaring personality. They can play with excitement and have a variety of characteristics, if just given the opportunity.
