Performance Notes for “Box”
      – Included with this piece is a handout that covers the most common flute beatbox effects (not only just those in this composition). Practice them first without the flute to get used to the different possible effects.
      – The improvised solo sections of the piece are optional (though recommended). If the opening solos are omitted begin the piece in measure six. If the middle beatbox-only solo is omitted repeat measure 89 four times.
      – The upper staff is the “traditional” flute part. Any note listed here should be fingered as written, including those with “x” note heads. If a note contains an “x” note head and a traditional note above it, finger the lower note and over-blow to the upper harmonic. Any time a note does not have a beatbox effect under it, it should be played normally. 
      – The lower staff is the beatbox part. The rhythm of the effects is listed with the desired effect above it. You should finger the note listed in the upper staff while performing the effect shown in the lower one. If only written beatbox effects are present (i.e. no written flute pitches above), perform the effects without blowing across the headjoint.
