The Canon is in fact a set of short canonic variations superimposed on a ground bass fragment of only two bars, and in its original form was written for three treble voices and continuo. Now, it has been heard in every conceivable re-orchestration, almost always to good effect, which speaks very well for Pachelbel's conception.
