1. Entracte
The orchestra preceding the 2nd act quotes and varies Don Jose's entrance song, which he sings as he appears – in a somewhat still and marital pose – in the tavern of Lilas Pastia: “Halt! Who goes there? Dragoon of Alcala!… I'm on my way to make my rival bite the dust… An affair of honor, and affair of the heart, for that is everything, dragoons of Alcala!”

2. Escamillo's Song
The famous torero Escamillo also comes in Pastia's tavern. Like Carmen's Habanera, his triumphant song has become famous throughout the world: “Now the, on guard! Come on! Toreador, on guard.” The melody – and certainly no less the text – is probably the most used quote from an opera.

3. Carmen's Dance for Don Jose
Carmen tries to win Don Jose's heart, so that he deserts from the army and joins her gang of smugglers. Her enticing and seducing castenet dance shall help to make him even more dependent on her.
