Program Notes:
The Capital Area Flute Club (CAFC) was founded in 1997 by Karen Drumm. The mission of the club is to create a positive environment for all flutists to come together and make music to be shared and enjoyed by the entire community. The Club includes members in a wide range of ages and experience. Members bring music to share, or play from the CAFC’s library of pieces. They meet once a month, September through June, and perform three concerts a year. February of 2017 marked the 20-year anniversary of their founding.
As a way to mark the anniversary year, “Catch A Falling Cherub” was commissioned by the Club. In the initial fact-finding conversation, various ideas for themes were discussed. An idea that resonated with the group was to use the letters of the club initials as thematic material. They use their club initials, C-A-F-C, as notes on a staff on their logo, so it was the perfect starting point for the piece.
The piece begins with a flowing triple pattern, alighting on each of the Club’s initials. From there the notes are used in other patterns, sometimes in harmonic progressions of their chords, sometimes in long lines of arrival. The piece is approximately 3 minutes long and appropriate for any type of concert performance.
