Preface:
      “Just when you need someone, nobody's around…”
           *to quickly re-play the melody for me;
           *to motivate me, even when I'm too tired to play; 
           *to patiently repeat the same part with me, until I get the entry right;
           *to keep strictly to the tempo, so that I won't slow down or speed up;
           *to just keep on playing even when I make a mistake, so I can practice sneaking back into the music.

      It was with these thoughts in mind that the collection Colors & Moods came into being. Each of the three volumes contains ten short and stylistically diverse character pieces with atmospheric and diversified duet-like accompaniments on a CD that can serve as a “training and playing partner.”
      The level of difficulty increases only very gradually in terms of new notes and rhythmic patterns in the pieces. So, you have at hand a whole series of diversified pieces at a similar level to help in training your expressive skills and endurance. The pieces don't take much effort to learn in a short time, so you can quickly increase your number of recital pieces. 
      Since the pieces allow you to shape them individually, the recorded flute part on the CD can of course be considered only as an example; you needn't imitate it! To leave room for your interpretation, dynamic and articulation markings have been left out. You can focus on different aspects such as shaping the sound, adding dynamics, articulation, finger technique, or phrasing, as desired. And if you are playing together with the piano, you need to practice agogics.
      The second part given for some of the pieces is of a similar level of difficulty to that for the main part. So, in a group lesson, for example, the pieces can be played jointly together with either the CD or piano accompaniment. Or the second part can be played as a supplementary training to the full CD version. 
      The piano part is constructed as a musically complete alternative to the accompaniment. Compared with the flute part this accompaniment is technically more demanding to play and may not be suitable for ensemble playing with your peers. However, you can use it in presenting the pieces at recitals, in concert, or even at music competitions. Dynamics, phrasing, and pedal markings are deliberately kept to a minimum. Use the audio tracks as guides to the musical style. 
      Special thanks go to Martin Schulte for his imaginative arrangements. What a surprise and joy it was to me to listen to each of the pieces, realizing that given my simple harmonic and stylistic specifications, he had worked magic.
