The journey of faith has always been accompanied by song. From the earliest biblical recordings it is evident that music was central to God's people. The Psalms, which comprise what is essentially the “first hymnal,” reflect the joys and the sorrows of God's people on this journey. They offer transparent and unobstructed views of those seeking to live a life of faith prior to the arrival of the Messiah.
Music was central to the life of the New Testament church as well. The Apostle Paul challenged early Christians to use music as a tool for growing and as an expression of gratitude to God: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.” -Colossians 3:16
Down through the centuries Christians have been challenged and inspired, enlightened and encouraged bby lyricists and composers who, for their respective generations, articulated the messages of faith, hope and love. They have given voice to the songs of the heart which might otherwise have remained silent. Contributors like William Bradbury, Fanny Crosbby, Charles and John Wesley, Isaac Watts and scores of others have provided the medium by which believers could corporately voice their convictions, affirm theology, and worship their God.
Though the God we worship is eternal and constant, those bearing the torch of faith carry it only a short distance before entrusting it to a successive generation.
