Deviations on the Carnival of Venice

A “jazzy” spin on this favorite!
'I first heard a recording of Briccialdi's variations on the Carnival of Venice for flute and piano when I fifteen. Not knowing how to get hold of the music, I transcribed it (from vinyl in those days!) and set about learning the piece. I subsequently played it to an eminent flute professor at an “advice audition' who pointed out that the piece was in 6/8, not in 3/4 as I had notated it and that coupled with my present flute technique, I was better suited to a career in coal mining than playing the flute.
Decades later, still undeterred by the eninent professor's advice, I have decided to write my own set of “Deviations” in various musical styles I have had the pleasure of encountering over the years, and in any key and time signature I jolly well like!
The eminent professor and I are now good friends and I hope he and anyone interested in playing yet another set of variations on this well known tune will have as much fun playing it as I had writing it.' — Mike Mower
