“The short, charming Divertimento in G major by an unknown master of the early Classical Period is here presented to the public for the first time.  Strictly speaking, one could attribute the work to the genre of the Trio Sonatas, although by title and style it belongs already to the early Classical Period.  The term “Trio Sonata” is understood in general to be for chamber music works of the Baroque for two upper voices and Basso continuo.  Admittedly, the term “Trio Sonata” is a neologism of a later time and cannot be found anywhere in the manuscripts of the old masters.  There they are always just called Trio or Sonata or Sonata a tre.  Therefore one should preferably choose for this chamber music genre the term Trio and distinguish between works with or without Basso continuo.  In the case of our present Divertimento we are facing the musically/stylistically so interesting borderline cases: cembalo can, but must not be used.  The question will then always arise, how independently the bass voice is led.  We could imagine as composer of our Divertimento either C.F. Abel, Chr. Bach or C. Stamitz.  In other words, we deal here with a work from a period where the cembalo was already less often used.  Actually, carefully speaking, the thought occuurs to play this work also without keyboard instrument, i.e. only with two flutes and cello.  The Divertimento offered here survises in hand-written parts at the Stiftsbibliothek (Cathedral Library) Heiligenkreuz near Vienna.” -Gronefeld, Preface
