Familiar Objects Seen in a New Light was commissioned in 1998 by the Georgia State University School of Music for presentation at a concert honoring Alfredo Barili, a pianist and composer who worked in Atlanta, Georgia, and had considerable influence on the musical community there in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The composition is dedicated to the late Dr Cherry Emerson, who for years championed the work and memory of Barili.
