Flutwasser for Solo C Flute and Extra for Solo Bass Flute by Antje Langkafel
German flutist/composer Antje Langkafel (b.1965) has based “Flutwasser” on the idea of combining flute playing with the human voice, especially the singing of harmonics. Before beginning to work on the piece it is recommended to practice some elements in advance, especially producing harmonics vocally using the vowels u,e,i while developing rich resonance within the head region. Other factors of resonance result from combinations of tremoli. The piece can be played in a free manner with widely extended effects of harmonics. Certain parts may be transposed one octave higher or lower to fit with the interpreter’s voice.
About “Extra”: Requires extreme expression,e.g.: – ‘oriental lament’ with strong movement of diaphragm (as if sobbing) – distinctive rhythm, like “”kock””, the singing should be highly “espressivo”. Playing with a “wide mouth” and with “full head and cheek resonance” is suggested.
