This eight-voice fugue was written in 1828 or 1829 when Berlioz was a student at the Paris Conservatory of Music. In competing for the coveted Prix de Rome, each student was required to demonstrate his skill in the art of counterpoint by composing a fugue. Berlioz complied by writing this complex work in eight parts, which includes a subject with two countersubjects, and all of the intricacies of fugal composition such as inversion, canonic imitation, and a pedal point in the last twenty measures
