Improvise like never before. Workout!
A few thoughts
During my many years of teaching at various music schools and at the University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna, I have become aware of the important role scales play in the development of a more complex understanding of musical contexts. If, at a later date, you listen to music of an advanced level and analyse it, you will also see that complex symphonies or improvisations consist of many small components such as scales, intervals and chords. What matters is how they are joined together or layered over each other.
My personal approach is not built on stereotypical, memorised patterns. Instead, I want students to see that it is important to practise a range of basic foundation material including scales, intervals, chords, etc. The idea is to practise patterns until a certain continuity is established, but as soon as we have absorbed them we move on and find our own paths based on these foundations. – Klaus Dickbauer, December 2015
