Hymnal Variations uses two famous hymn tunes as themes along with 12 variations, six on each hymn tune, in an arch-like construction. The first tune, entitled Avon (Beneath the Sacred Throne) in the old hymnbooks, is stated at the beginning and is followed by six short variations. After a brief transition, the first of six variations on the theme Nettleton (Come Thou Fount) is heard. The piece concludes with a fortissimo statement of the Nettleton tune.
