This work portrays the prophet's ministry of repentance and in preparing the way of Jesus Christ, with text extracted from three New Testament gospels(as given in the New American Standard Bible): Matthew 3:1-12, Luke 3:10-16, Matthew 3:13-17, Luke 3:18-20, Mark 6:18-29. After a hymn-like introduction, the Music largely serves to underscore and amplify the text. Elsewhere, such as in Christ's baptism by the Holy Spirit and at John's death, it serves symbolically and dramatically in place of text.
