He was an Italian composer and organist, and was one of the most influential musicians of his time. He represents the culmination of the Venetian School, at the time of the shift from Renaissance to Baroque idioms. This piece features all the most satisfying elements of Renaissance music. While none of the individual parts are difficult, the complex eight part polyphony makes this more of a challenge than it would first appear. The articulation requires detailed attention to bring out the various entries of the themes, and the dynamics need to bring out the echo effects used in this music.
