Memories of East Tennessee

Memories of East Tennessee (in the Early Forties) by Austin Alan Scott. Arranged for Piccolo, 3 C Fltues, Alto Flute and Bass Flute. Also includes an alternate 4th C Flute part that can be used in groups that do not have access to an alto flute. Includes score and parts.

This suite was inspired by the composer's two-year stay in the region of the Great Smokey Mountains in East Tennessee some fifty years ago.

“The first movement, “Cade's Cove in '43”, depicts the secluded pastoral character of an isololated mountain “cove” or valley, a home to a thriving but self-sufficient community of pioneer descendents who retained the old ways, now completely dispersed.  Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is now a living museum of a way of life now long past.

The second movement, “The White Frame Church near Tater Branch”, is a portrayal of a service at the Missionary Baptist Church in the cove, quoting suggestions of revival hymns loved by the mountain people. These meetings were intermittent but lively.

The third movement, “Rhododen-dance”,while quoting no actual folk material directly, is written in the style of popular country dance music of the region. The subject was a once well-known square-dance hall in Gatlinburg where high-jinx shenanigans took place every Saturday night.”     –      Austin Alan Scott

Scored for piccolo, 3 C flutes (2 need low “b”), alto flute, bass flute   (a C flute part is included for the alto flute part, but the alto flute gives optimum effect)
