Introduction:
I have always been fascinated with ancient Christmas carols and customs. It seems that there is a bottomless wealth of these lesser-known bits of our Christmas history and it is a delight to hear something “new”, something unlike most of the usual (yet beautiful) Christmas fare. And it is an even greater delight to realize that this “new” music is actually quite old and has been there all the time! Having said that, I have included two and a half new pieces inspired by ancient customs: (1) Peltzmarten, a Christmas lullaby, (2) Lucias Ijus inspired by Swedish customs, and (one half) a counter-melody to the beloved “Coventry Carol.”
