“Over the Edge was commissioned by the Blumental Foundation and the National Flute Industry Council, Inc., in honor of the 25th anniversary of the National Flute Association. It was premiered in Chicago at the 25th anniversary convention of the National Flute Association on August 16, 1997 by the National Flute Association Professional Flute Choir, Amy Rice Blumental, Conductor. This work combines conventional flute writing with highly aggressive, jazz oriented writing. The performers are called on to play vigorously in sections marked Electrically, Wild and Dangerous, Sassy, Saucy, Spicy, Insistently, Seductively, Alluringly and Over the Edge.”
Instrumentation:
Piccolo, 4 C flutes, alto flute, bass flute, and percussion
Percussion: Cabasa, Clave, Cowbell and Bongo Drums
The percussion parts may be played by actual percussionists (preferable) or by members of the choir who would otherwise be doubling a part.
