Dedicated to a quilter, the three movements in this piece are woven or stitched together to create a new piece. The first movement is Noel in a Manger, which melds The First Noel with Away in a Manger. It is in a lullaby setting, with each carol being presented separately as a round. Then, the two carols appear together, and finally the two rounds are overlaid. The second movement combines JS Bach Jesu of Man's Desiring, There's a Song in the Air and O Tannenbaum. O Song of Joy became the title of the movement, and the “Jesu” obligato of the “Jesu” chorale appears constantly through the movement (except for four measures). The last movement, Joy on Deck, combines Joy to the World and Deck the Halls. At the end of this movement, Jubilate chimes in.
