and
Galliard by Tionot Arbeau (1519-1588)
arranged by Russell S Howland
edited by Janette Erickson
Published by Alry Publications
Includes score and parts
Instrumentation:
Flute 1 (divisi)
Flute 2 (divisi)
Flute 3 (divisi)
Alto Flute (or Flute 4)
Bass Flute (or Bass Clarinet)
String Bass (or Contrabass Flute)
Harp (or Piano)
Because Pavan and Galliard are in the same key, they can easily be programmed together. Both are dances and offer a nice contrast of tempos between them. The Pavan (English spelling) is slow and stately; its name comes from the word “pavano,” which means peacock. The Galliard is noted for its short abrupt quater notes and lively tempo.
The pieces were originally arranged by Russell S. Howland for Les Flutes Enchantees, an augmented flute choir, of which Janette Erickson is the Music Director. Although alto flutes and bass clarinet were originally used, C flute and bass flute substitutions may be made. String bass/Contrabass flute and harp parts are also included.
