Performance Notes:
       Gabriel Urbain Faure (1845-1924) exerted an influence upon French music far in excess of what might be indicated by his rather limited number of compositions. As a professor of composition and then director of the Conservatoire, he was the teacher of Nadia Boulanger, Georges Enesco and Maurice Ravel.
      The Pavane, Op. 50, was written the same year as his requiem (1887) when the composer was 42 years old and was employed as a church organist in Paris. The use of this old dance form as well as the textual references indicate the composer's ties to the past as well as his elegant harmonic simplicity. 
      The original key of f# minor has been transposed here to g minor, a more felicitous woodwind key.
