Program Note:
Perimeters was completed in January of 2017 and written for Dr. Susan Royal and the Fredonia Flute Ensemble. The opening material is divided between two distinct groups, each focusing on a different type of musical sound. The first is a raucous jumble of soloistic gestures articulated by a quartet of flutes at the stage perimeter. In contrast, a lyrical sequence of solos, duos, and trios emanenate from a central ensemble comprised of flute, alto flute, and bass flute. Eventually, these ideas give rise to a series of canons – performed by the perimeter quartet at various time and musical intervals – while the internal trio interjects, accompanies, and punctuates the quadraphonic elements distributed around the stage.
