Preface:
      Johann Michael Haydn was born in Rohrau (Lower Austria) on 14. 9. 1737 about four and a half years after his elder brother, Joseph. He underwent musical training to become a chorister at the Vienna Choir School attached to St. Stephen's where he also learned to play the violin, piano and organ. 
      After embarking on a career in 1757 as 'Concertmeister' at the court of the Bishop of Groß-Wardein in Hungary, Haydn moved to the court of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg in 1763. There, the “Hofmusicus und Concertmeister” would appear to have been called upon to deputize for Leopold Mozart during the latter's frequent journeys abroad with his son Wolfgang Amadeus. In 1777, Haydn was appointed organist at Salzburg's Holy Trinity Church and in 1781 succeeded Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as Court and Cathedral Organist. The fact that he continued to hold both posts up to his death in 1806 was owed to his distinguished reputation as an organist. 
      During his lifetime, Michael Haydn was held in far greater esteem than he is today where he is overshadowed by his elder brother and the two Mozarts. The influence he exercised on young Mozart cannot be overlooked, from whom he would appear to have received a fair share of stimulating ideas in return. 
      Previously unpublished the Quartet in A Major is an appealing work, easy to perform and scored for a rather unsual combination. I discoverd the manuscript on the basis of a memorandum dating back to 1986 in the Court Library of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis. A debt of gratitude is owed for permission to publish it. 
      The appogiaturas are reproduced as they appear in the manuscript and should be executed in accordance with the rules applying to the period.
