REVERIE celebrates the wonderfully lyrical voices of the “traditional” wind quintet. On one hand the instruments blend together as five singers, with their ability to play so lyrically. But on the other hand, they are very much individual voices with distinct characteristics.
In this one-movement work, the opening and closing passages allow the voices to float their individual melodic lines amid the sparkling colors of the higher instruments and the rich resonance of the lower instruments. This is a true reverie – sweet, pastoral, and dreamlike. The middle section contrasts the lyricism with energy and playfulness, as the colors become more intense and bold. But the dreamlike reverie returns with a peaceful and gentle coda.
I am thankful to my friends in the wonderful Monmouth Winds who commissioned and premiered this work, which is gratefully dedicated to them.
