Mozart's Rondo in C Major (K373) was originally composed for violin and orchestra. The work was written in 1781 for the violin player Antonio Brunetti, who was the Konzertmeister of the Salzburg Court Chapel. Brunetti played the first public performance of the Rondo that very year in Vienna. Twenty years later, in 1801, a transcription for Flute and Orchestra (K184Anh)) was published simultaneously by F.A. Hoffmeister in Vienna and “au bureau de Musique de A. Kuhnel” in Leipzig. That is only one year after the publication of the original work. To accommodate the possibilities of the four-keyed flute, the piece was transposed to D major. Though the name of the arranger is unknown to us, we may assume that the composer and publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister is responsible for this transcription.
