Here We Come A-Wassailing Medley

The RoseWynde Christmas Collection, arranged for flute, violin and harp, includes three upbeat tunes that echo the joy of the season. “Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella,” the beloved 17th century carol, is simple and charming. Though traditionally in 3/8, this arrangement is in 6/8 for a sweet, lifting quality. The flute and violin each have a solo verse, followed by a harmony in the third verse and a brief coda section. The harp has an eight-measure bridge recapping the opening and introducing a motif from “O Come, All Ye Faithful.”

“Sussex Carol,” also know as “On Christmas Night,” is an English carol and opens with a sparkling harp solo, modulating from D to G. “Sussex” is woven with the Irish jig “A Merry Christmas,” which is introduced by the flute, then answered by the violin restating the “Sussex Carol.” Finally, “A Merry Christmas” is played in full in the key of A major. This arrangement should be played with a strong dancing pulse througout.

“Here We Come A-Wassailing Medley” is a lively set of Irish dance jigs. The traditional English carol “Mere We Come A-Wassailing” is stated briefly in the introduction, followed by a 6/8 jig, “Mug of Brown Ale,” then moving to the cut-time hornpipe “Bottom of the Punchbowl” in D major. The arrangement returns to 6/8 with “Tripping Up the Stairs” then on to the now fully stated “Here We Come A-Wassailing,” played as a fast reel, ending with a flourish.
