A gifted linguist, Leroy Anderson thought at one time that a career in music might not hold much promise, and so he almost became a language teacher. He decided to give music a final try, after being offered a position to teach language at a private school, which proved to be a pivotal decision in the early 1930s. It was in the summer of 1946 that he composed this tune, during a heat wave at Painter Hill in Woodbury, Connecticut. The Boston Pops under the direction of Arthur Fielder gave the premier of the beloved holiday song, with the words being added by Mitchell Parish in 1950.
