Originally for unaccompanied violin, this transcription for unaccompanied flute by flutist Gian-Luca Petrucci is technically on the difficulty level that Prokofiev normally employed when writing for the flute in his orchestral and chamber music works.The transcription uses all the means at its disposal to emphasize the ironic sarcasm of Prokofiev’s music, the incisive quality of his rhythms, the flexible structure of his themes, the abrupt nature of his modulations, and the unexpectedly melancholy and dreamlike character of his cadences.
