La Guerre‘s sonatas belong to the first examples of this genre in France. The composer was aware of her being a renewer of musical form and she named the iron (which she did own) and the sonata as the most remarkable inventions of the 17th century. La Guerre composed 6 Violin Sonatas, which were published in 1707. The first two Sonatas which are presented in this volume show typical features of La Guerre’s style: a sequence of numerous contrasting movements (the longer one of the two sonatas has 7 movements) and a cello part which gains a quality of its’ own and is not just a coloring of the left-hand keyboard sound.
