T.V. Theme for Wind Quintet and Piano by Russell Denwood
Instrumentation: flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, piano
Piano score and parts
The idea to write this piece was suggested by a friend who was a producer for a TV/film company. Three minutes was the TV time limit for the title sequence in those days (somewhat longer now). The drama was a fast-moving mystery, with a jazz undertone to the story. Initially it was written for 3 saxes and piano, but eventually ended up in larger arrangements, one of the best of which I think is this wind quintet and piano version. The piece was sadly not taken up by the film company who had moved on to other things by the time I had written it, but it was an enjoyable challenge all the same! Film/TV music is a demanding art form, with precision needed in timing and appropriate thematic content, as well as the ability by the composer to work very quickly under pressure! A sharp lesson to be learnt by “rookie” would-be media composers! —Russell Denwood
