This classic piece, from 1924, is truly a work of genius. It is one of the first written versions of jazz and in many ways the most perfect from that era. Firmly grounded in the already developed jazz and popular traditions of the early 20's, it is succinct and terse, even beyond the earliest recordings of improvised jazz. And though written out, it sums up the accomplishment of the youthful Gershwin as does nothing else we have.
