Trio, Op45 for Flute (or Violin), Cello and Piano by Louise Farrenc
Piano score, flute, violin and cello parts
For Monsieur Louis Dorus
I. Allegro deciso
II. Andante
III. Scherzo
IV. Finale
There are virtuoso first and last movements in this trio, an expressive Cantilena (Andante) and a charming Scherzo in-between, attributes which are distinctive about Farrenc’s chamber-and orchestral compositions. This edition is a reprint of the original Leduc edition.
French pianist/composer Louise Dumont Farrenc (1804-1875) received her first studies and lessons in music theory and composition at age 15 from Anton Reicha at the Paris Conservatoire. Another important influence on Farrenc was Johann Nepomuk Hummel, whose chamber works she studied intensely. In 1821, Louise married her chamber music partner, the flute player and publisher Aristide Farrenc. In 1825, her first piano works were published, from 1830 onwards her chamber music (mostly with piano) as well as orchestral works (including overtures and three symphonies) were published. In 1842, Louise Farrenc’s appointment to the position of Professor of Piano in the women’s department of the Paris Conservatoire represented important recognition of her work. She was to occupy this position until her death in 1875. Farrenc was the first woman to be appointed a teacher of music at the Paris Conservatoire – albeit at a lower salary that her male colleagues.
