For centuries, Italian mountain shepherds descended upon southern cities, becoming street musicians during the days before Christmas.  Typically, they would accompany themselves with a sweet-toned bagpipe.  This arrangement works fine with six C flutes, but is richer when the piccolo, alto and bass are added to give the fuller dimension of flute choir sound.
