Wheatgoddess Creations presents ‘Waterways Beneath the Polar Ice Shelf’ for flute and piano, written by Nicole Margaret Mitchell.
This piece was commissioned by the National Flute Association for the 2024 Young Artists Competition. It is dedicated to Donald G. Mitchell. The composer writes about this piece, ‘The polar ice shelf at the North Pole helps to regulate the Earth’s climate. While looking at its surface, one may witness pristine stillness. However, beneath is a magnitude of incredible activity. One can only imagine the invisible ice mountains and rivers being sculpted magically by nature, improvised in each moment. This was a fascinating thought that inspired ‘Waterways Beneath the Polar Ice Shelf,’ sonifying the liquid and iciness that the flute can express so well. The more daunting realize of these under-ice waterways and the active melting of the polar ice shelf is the recent rise of sea levels igniting the current climate crises, caused by our human irresponsibility in our relationship to the planet.’
