This wind quintet is an elaborate reworking of four songs from Stuff and Nonsense (Op.14), dating from 1992. Humour pervades, in all its guises – from irony to parody, from sarcasm to mock banality! The work is essentially tonal, with elements of jazz and 'wrong-note' harmony to emphasize the humour, and it pays homage to the sardonic side of Malcolm Arnold, exponent par excellence of the lighter side of music. Each movement is structured as a series of variations, the themes and harmony being constantly reworked on each presentation.
