J.B. de Boismortier (1682-1765) lived during the first flowering of the flute, when it was the instrument preferred by many amateurs and the demand for new works was heavy. He wrote many sonatas for one, two, and three flutes, with and without continuo, and even concertos for five flutes. Naturally he also composed a work for beginners. The work does not, however, include pieces in all of the 24 keys of “The Well-Tempered Clavier” but only in the 18 keys that could be played on the early 18th-century flutes. The pieces have been numbered in their new order by the editor, who has also modernized the key signatures. The music has not been tampered with in any other respect. This includes the signs for ornaments.
