Bolero

Maurice Ravel's (1875-1937) most famous orchestral work, Bolero, was commissioned by a ballet dancer and eventually immortalized as the ultimate musica lseduction in the movie “10.” This arrangement of Bolero was done specifically to introduce the members of the flute family, as the original did with the orchestral instruments. Amy Rice-Young liked to introduce not only the flutes, but also the flutists that are playing them. There is ample time through the use of “vamps” to accomplish this. If desired, further percussion can be used as the piece reaches its climax. The parts are frequently divisi, but this can be optional, as is the use of the contrabass flute.
