Stylistically based on gospel and blues vocal traditions, this piece is a subtle interplay of inflection, rhythmic flexibility, and a wide range of colors.
This piece takes stylistic cues from gospel and blues vocal traditions, and should be approached more as a song than as an instrumental piece. To get the greatest effect from this piece, the melody and accompaniment must be played in the proper style–with the naturalness of singing voices, yet with feeling. The vocal part is included to give the possibility that a singer would take the lead, replacing the first flute.
