This premiered at the National Flute Association Convention August 12, 2016 by Ensemble Triolet: Wendy Stern, flute; Shelby Yamin, violin; Joyce Lindorff, harpsichord. The two movements are polar opposites in spirit and “flavor,” yet they share common harmonies and the structural use of pitch centers G and A. The first, Caramel Macchiato is largely coloristic, using a repeated patterns of nine rich and closely-spaced harmonies. It is also an exploration of the colors and expressive potential of the three instruments. The second movement, Café do Brazil, is a playful fugato, based on the rhythms of the Brazilian choro, samba and bossa nova, with a touch of Argentine flavor. The first statement of the fugue subject modulates up a step from G to A. Subsequent entries continue the upward progression, from A to B, etc. The subject later appears in inversion (modulating down by whole steps) and in augmentation.
