Carol of the Bells by Mykola Leontovich
Arranged for Flute Choir and optional Hand Bells by Ann Cameron Pearce
Scored for either 6 C Flutes, or 4 C Flutes, Alto Flute and Bass Flute, with optional Hand Bells
The Ukranian New Year’s song known as Shchedryk has gradually become a popular choice for the Christmas musical season. The original words for the piece express wishes for a rich harvest, happiness and hope. This very popular Christmas carol receives renewed energy with the charming combination of flutes and optional handbells. Its lively tempo has the momentum needed to bring it to its traditional exuberant conclusion. The range is from C4 to Bb6 and all parts are of equal difficulty with accented sections and then rising scale passages. Scored for a minimum of 6C flutes, enhanced by substituting alto and bass on parts 5 & 6. Handbells require 2 players using 3 handbell trees. Handchimes may be used instead, but require 5 players. Piano, xylophone, or vibraphone may also be substituted for handbells. If handbells are not available, this part could be played on piano, xylophone, or vibraphone.
