COLOR CONFIGURATIONS is a single movement work in two sections separated by a brief cadenza. There is no formal structure; rather, a series of melodies and counter-melodies held together by a recurring “Color Theme”. The work constantly changes tonal centers and mood and thus is lent to a romantic flavor.
The “ideal” instrumentaion for this piece is twelve flutists, using two on each part. It may be performed with as few as six, however, by playing only the top line of the divisi passages. Please note that Part 2 is for either Eb or C flutes, Part 5 for Alto or C flutes, and Part 6 for Bass or C flutes. – Dennis Hugh Avey
