Concerto in G Major after the Clarinet Concerto in G Major (K622) by W.A. Mozart (1756-1791)
Edited by A. E Muller (1767-1817)
For Flute and Piano
THIS IS NOT THE STANDARD CONCERTO IN G MAJOR (K313) FOR FLUTE AND PIANO!
This Flute Concerto is, of course, an arrangement of the well-known Clarinet Concerto which Mozart had written in October 1791 for his friend Stadler. In later years, the Liepzig publisher Breitkopf acquired the autograph from the Offenback publisher Johann Andre who, at the time, had bought from Konstanze all the works which Mozart had left at his death. Breitkopf published the parts of the Clarinet Concerto in March 1802, and at the same time he issues a version for Flute in an arrangement by the Leipzig Thomaskantor and virtuoso flautist August Eberhard Muller (1767-1817). later he became Goethe's Kappelmeister in Weimar; he was a fervent admirer of Mozart, and this adaptation is no mere arrangement. Naturally, in Muller's version, the outer movements are shorter, for Mozart had written the clarinet part specifically for “hi” Stadler, and some of the passage work cannot be adapted to the characteristics of the flute. Also, Muller replaces the flutes by oboes. However, the beautiful Adagio remains unchanged.
