II. Tango Languido
Woodwind instruments are voices, and music written for them should be vocal. These three dances from different periods and social cultures have as a unifying thread the vocal quality of the melodies and counter-melodies.
Each movement of the Eclectic Trio is short and rather spare. Duration of the entire work, including time between movements, is about 5:30. The success of the piece depends upon the musicality of the players and their communication with each other in the execution of entrances, phrase endings, and tempo changes. There is plenty of room for give and take between the lines, and players should take full advantage of their soloistic moments. The Bb clarinet part was originally cast as an A clarinet part and can be played by either.
Performers may sit or stand to perform this piece. The choreography in “Jitterbug” only works if the players stand, but the movement may be performed and enjoyed even if the players remain stationary, whether seated or standing.
