Preface:
The composition “Auswandern” (Emigrating) was written in October and November 2015 at the request of the society Freunde der Querflote e. V. for their 2016 annual. The language of the music is tonal, post-tonal and mainly consonant. In stylistic terms, the piece comes close to (stylised) tango music. However, it is not “dance music”, but a concert piece.
The three parts focus on three aspects in the life of an immigrant from a personal (i.e. not sociological) perspective: the search for a new country, connected with a certain excited anticipation of a new beginning, then a moment of nostalgia and a backward glance to country of origin and, finally, a phase of integration in the adopted country.
Basically, these three sections occur simultaneously, not consecutively: it is possible to feel homesick, even if one is completely integrated in one's new environment.
The first movement has a milonga rhythm and is based on whole-tone scales. The second is melodically expressive, in moderate tempo. The third is a resolute fugue – a construction principle that optimally represents the integration and equality of all the parts. It is based on octatonic scales.
