Program Notes:
The last major work composed by Paul Dukas was the ballet La Péri. It is about a man on a quest to find immorality. He finds the fair-like being Péri from Persian mythology. She is holding the flower of immortality. He steals the flower from her but falls deeply in love with her. With one kiss he loses the flower and with that his immortality.
Prior to the first performance he added this Fanfare for brass instruments. He never discussed the purpose of this prelude but many think it was used to herald the start of the performance giving the audience time to return to their seats. This short work is frequently performed in contrast to the ballet, which has been nearly forgotten.
