Performance Notes:
In late 2002, the Northwest Flute Collegium and the Pacific Flute Ensemble asked for a piece for double flute choir, to be premiered at the 2003 NFA Convention in Las Vegas. The result is “Fire & Ice and other Miracles.” Fire & Ice attempts to capture the beauty, energy, and mystery of certian phenomena found in nature and in humankind. The first movement, “Sky Fire,” depicts the Northern Lights. The unusual sound effects reflect actual sounds sometimes made by the aurora borealis. The second movement, “Secrets,” explores the miracle and mystery of the human personality. The third movement, “Snow Mist,” revolves around the incredible beauty of ice in nature, such as ice crystals, snow flakes, etc. The whispering evokes ice-like sounds and the words are not meant to be understood by the audience. As for the piece as a whole, choirs which rehearse separately will be surprised by the results of putting two groups together – it all fits together like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
