Five Lyrics of Louise Bogan was commissioned by Bonita Boyd for her recitals with Jan DeGaetani in Kilbourn Hall, January 31, 1978, and Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, New York City, February 19, 1978.   Written during the summer of 1977, the direct and clear in its tonal stance reflecting Benson's love for poetry and his care in presenting its essence.  The voice and flute lines are simple, rarely employing virtuostic gestures or registral leaps.  The settings are, in short, straightforward and vulnerable, taking their cure from the lean elegance of the texts.
